In this post we give you the full rundown on domain names, from what they are to how much they cost.
What is a domain name?
A domain name is an address people type into their browser URL bar to reach your website. If you were to think of it like your house, the domain name would be your address.

Domain names are used to simplify how people find your website.
They also give you ownership; domain names are unique so once you’ve registered it nobody else can use it.
The different parts of a domain name
It’s also worth understanding some of the different parts of a domain name. Especially as when you come to register one you’ll be presented with different options.

For your business website, the three main parts are:
- Protocol: this is the http://: or https:// part. You always want https:// which adds an extra layer of security and comes from having an SSL certificate. More on that later.
- Second-level domain: This is the unique part of the address and identifier of your website.
- Top-level domain: this is the end part of your domain name that helps classify the domain e.g .com, .org, .net. Generally for your business, you want to use .com or the country equivalent e.g .co.uk if you’re UK based
There’s a bit more going behind the scenes from a technical point of view with things like IP addresses, but as a business owner, it’s not essential to know about this.
Where and how do you get a domain name?
To purchase a new domain name you need to go through a registrar.
A quick search will provide a comprehensive list of different providers. some popular ones include GoDaddy, 123-reg, and NameCheap.
Once on these sites, you can search for the domain name you want and check its availability and cost.
It’s also possible to purchase domains from other people who already own a domain name you want.
You can do this with private sales and transfers or by going through a domain auction which lists already-owned domains for sale.
How much do domain names cost?
On average a new domain costs around £7-£12 for one year.
Each year you will get the option to renew your ownership or let it expire.
Domains that are listed on auction sites have no limit on price and can cost hundreds even thousands.
